According to Tridens Technology, between 2012 and 2021, approximately 17 million vehicles were sold worldwide, which includes all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It is also expected that by the year 2030, roads all around the world would have 145 million electric vehicles, which would include electric cars, buses, heavy trucks, and vans.

Ather Energy was founded in 2013, by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, and is headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Currently, the company generates approximately INR 100 crores every month. Ather Energy is a startup that is solely focused on designing and selling premium electric two-wheelers, to customers all over India. By doing so, Ather Energy aims to change the perspective on electric vehicles, and build high-performance, zero-maintenance, and smart electric vehicles.

It started attracting a substantial amount of interest; in December 2014, the co-founders of Flipkart, Sachin Bansal, and Binny Bansal invested a sum of $1 million as seed capital. Both of them believed that this company would revolutionize the electric vehicle industry in the years to come. 

Before we talk more about the company, let’s get to know the two founders a little better. 

Tarun Mehta, the co-founder, and CEO of Ather is an IIT Madras alumni, who pursued a dual degree, Engineering Design before he started to work as a Deputy Manager at Ashok Leyland. During his college days, he interned at Mercedes Benz and BHEL. So, you get the sense that he always had some experience working with vehicles.

Swapnil Jain, the other half of the brain behind Ather, is also an alumnus of IIT Madras, where he pursued a Master of Technology in Engineering Design. After his studies, he interned at General Motors and BHEL, and after that decided to start Ather, with his friend Tarun Mehta. 

As of now, Ather Energy has manufactured and introduced two models; 450 Plus, in September 2018, and 450X in January 2020. They have also launched AtherGrid, an electric vehicle charging network. On July 19, 2022, the new version of 450X was introduced. It is called 450X 3. 

The company also has its experience centers, which are called AtherSpace. It helps them give their customers a complete ownership experience. Currently, the company operates in more than 10 Indian cities, such as Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Kozhikode, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore.

In December 2019, Ather Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up a 400,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant for electrical vehicles in Hosur, which will see the investment amount rounding to be around INR 635 crores.
