The emergence of the internet, complemented by advancements in the computing power of the humble personal computer, has made possible advancements in fields such as gaming, entertainment, and education, to name a few.

Many EdTech start-ups have come to the fore and flourished, buoyed by the willingness of people who embrace the online medium of education.

Physics Wallah, founded by Alakh Pandey, is one such EdTech start-up. Alakh Pandey hails from the town of Allahabad (now Pragyaraj). It is the latest entrant to India’s unicorn. Alakh Panday’s net worth is currently at 77 crores! Alakh Panday’s love for teaching students stands undiminished, and he actively participates in the daily operations of Physics Wallah.

But things weren’t always so rosy for Physics Wallah Founder Alakh Pandey. Growing up, he had to face lots of financial hardship. Their financial situation deteriorated so much that they were forced to sell their home.

He began conducting tuition classes for younger children to support his family while still being a child himself. This early exposure to teaching developed into a passion and led him to set up PhysicsWallah.

The Physics Wallah founder ‘s journey started as a YouTube Channel in 2016, preparing students for the IIT-JEE and NEET examinations. Alakh also uploaded lectures and solutions on various subjects for students between Classes 9-12.

Encouraged by the positive response to the YouTube channel, Alakh decided to create an app. There were quite a few hurdles encountered while building the Physics Wallah app.

Things took a turn for the better when Alakh Pandey met Prateek Maheshwari, who had prior experience in EdTech via his startup, PenPencil. The duo met in 2018 and started working on the PhysicsWallah mobile app shortly.

After two long years of perseverance, their efforts bore fruit, and the app was made public in 2020. Currently, the app has more than 5 million downloads on the Google Play store.

The two of them have been collaborating to meet student demands, adding live classes, working on a roster of teachers and other features, including being able to clarify doubts via the app itself.

What makes Physics Wallah stand out from the crop of EdTech apps is its profitability. This is at a time when other EdTech firms are laying off employees and putting on hold any expansion plans they may be having.

Physics Wallah continues to roll on and is gearing up to launch educational content in nine vernacular languages. These include Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Odia, Malayalam, and Kannada. The expansion plans align with its aim to connect with over 250 million students by 2025.
