When the music is by AR Rahman, you know you are in for a fantastic background score.

Sarvam Thaala Mayam is a musical that revolves around the mridangam player named Vembu Iyer and his student Peter Johnson.

Peter is the son of a mridangam maker but has no genuine interest in the business. He is not serious about his life or goals. One day his father gives him the job to deliver mridangam to Vendu Iyer’s concert. When he reaches the concert, he gets mesmerized to see Vembu perform. He feels in his gut that this is his calling.

He starts a journey, almost a “reality-show kind,” where he goes through personal transformation. He faces caste-based prejudices and overcomes the hurdles of the world of showbiz.

Merku Thodarchi Malai

Directed by Lenin Bharathi

Lead Actors – Antony, Gayathri Krishnaa, Abu Valayankulam

Merku Thodarchi Malai is a documentary-style movie touching multiple narratives of modern society. With its beautiful camera angles, it will show you the might of nature and its grandeur.

The story is about the life of Rangasamy, aka Rangu (Antony), who is a daily wage laborer. In the first half, a lot of focus is on showing his simplistic life.

He has a dream of owning his land someday. But, you will see how capitalistic culture makes it challenging for him to achieve such a basic dream.

It will force you to ponder who is the eventual beneficiary of the things that are done in the name of “growth?”

Mersal

Directed by Atlee

Lead Actors –  Vijay, SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Akkineni, Nithya Menen

Starring one of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema, Vijay, Mersal is an entertaining yet thrilling movie with groovy music.

The story revolves around twin brothers Maaran and Vetri. One is a doctor who fights against corruption, and the other is a magician. The plot becomes interesting when they meet and join forces to take revenge for the murder of their parents.

The music is by AR Rahman; extra points just for that.

Solo

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar

Lead Actors Dulquer Salmaan, Dhanshika, Neha Sharma, Sruthi Hariharan,  Arthi Venkatesh, Dino Morea, Manoj K. Jayan, Soubin Shahir

It’s understandable if your “sole” reason for watching “Solo” is  Dulquer Salman. Right ladies?

The movie gives you a poetic journey linking human emotions, divinity, and nature. It tells the story of four characters by providing a distinct voice to each based on the elements of nature. It depicts – Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water, each being different dimensions of  Lord Siva.

The movie rolls in 4 separate narratives.

As Shekhar, Dulquer plays the part of a musician who has a speech impairment and is in love with a dancer who is blind. The next part is of Dr. Trilok Menon, who helps an accident victim on the road.

Then comes the character of Siva. Here, he plays the role of a gangster who is harsh to his wife but caring for his brother. In the last narrative, he plays the role of Rudra, who is madly in love with his girlfriend and is ready to fight all the odds.

Although each character has a different personality, their pursuit of love in different forms connects them.

Super Deluxe

Directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja

Lead Actors Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni, Ramya Krishnan, Mysskin, Gayathrie

Super Deluxe is dark, edgy, and real. A perfect example of new-age Netflix Tamil movies. The film is an excellent example of evolved writing. With a potent blend of dark humor, the movie touches on many taboo subjects.

The film has four narratives intermingling with each other. There is a story of a transgender woman named Shilpa. She is going through a tough time as circumstances test her love for her son and family.

A couple, Mugin and Vembu, are going through a tormenting phase as they have to dispose of the body of Vembu’s ex-lover. More thrill?

There is Leela, who used to be a porn star, and now struggles with her past and tries to save her injured son. Leela’s husband, Arpuntham, is having a crisis of faith.

Five teens (Gaaji, Vasanth, Thooyavan, and Sooriwho) decide to watch porn and end up discovering something shocking.

You got to watch Super Deluxe to find out how each of these stories ends.

Mandela

Directed by Madonne Ashwin

Lead actors Yogi Babu, Sheela Rajkumar

Mandela is a political satire that shows the impact of caste-based politics.

The central plot is around a local body election. The competition is between two half brothers belonging to different castes.

An underprivileged barber in the village becomes the center of attention when his vote becomes the deciding factor in the election.

The events that follow will make you laugh and, at the same time, will give you an insight into scammy electoral practices.

Petta

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj

Lead Actors Rajinikanth, Simran

Rajnikanth movies are a category of cinema in their own being. Petta has all the elements of an entertaining Rajnikanth movie. It is the reinvented version of Baasha (another Rajni super-hit) but with clever twists.

Kaali, aka Rajnikanth, camouflages his identity as a friendly hostel warden. However, he comes with a history of a violent past. He enters the hostel with a secret mission, and his journey, from there on, takes you through a story filled with action, romance, and thrill.

Taramani

Directed by Ram

Lead actors -Andrea Jeremiah, Vasanth Ravi, Adrian Knight Jesly

Taramani is a movie that deals with multiple aspects of modern-day relationships. It shows how society still finds it hard to deal with a strong-independent woman.

Taramani, the titular character, is a bold, corporate woman and a single mother. Yet, in her day-to-day life, her openness and independence are subjected to judgments.

As the story moves forward, a romantic angle develops between Taramani and Prabhunath. Prabhu gradually tries to dominate her, but the character of Taramani asserts that it’s not her job to handle his insecurities.

The movie will also take you through Prabhu’s past and his evolution as a person.

A lot of taboo subjects are touched when you see their relationship take a different form.

Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal

Directed by Desingh Periyasamy

Lead actors -Dulquer Salmaan, Ritu Varma, Rakshan, Niranjani Ahathian

If you are in the mood for a light-funny movie, Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal is a perfect choice. The story is of two friends who pretend to be app developers and con people.

Things take a terrible turn when DCP Pratap becomes invested in tracking them down.
