Many of us have used this app numerous times and enjoyed a movie, a stand-up, a concert, or even a play.
So, today, we are going to have a look at a brief BookMyShow case study.
The start of BookMyShow
The year 1999 saw a dot-com boom and new businesses were coming up every day, and BookMyShow was one of them.
In the same year, three friends, who later became to be known as the founders of BookMyShow, Parikshit Dar, Rajesh Balpande, and the current CEO of BookMyShow, Ashish Hemrajani were backpacking in South Africa and happened to hear a promotion of rugby tickets on the radio.
This ignited the idea of building an online ticket-booking platform, that we all know as BookMyShow.
Ashish Hemrajani came back from the trip and quit his job to solely focus on building this platform. He incorporated Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., which is the parent company of BookMyShow, and managed to raise $500 thousand for this venture.

The journey
Due to the equity financial crisis at the turn of the century, there was a mass investor withdrawal in dot-com companies, and this hampered BookMyShow’s success as well.
The company had to significantly downsize.
However, in 2003, multiplexes were on the rise and BookMyShow saw that as an opportunity to sell ticketing software in order to get back in business. So, they reached out to multiplex providers and sold them their ticketing software.
This was a turnaround in their fortune and BookMyShow started its journey to become the behemoth we know it to be.
However, it wasn’t until 2007 that BookMyShow became what we know it to be today, an online ticketing platform. The very next year, the company made a revenue of ₹7 crores.
In 2010, they took it to the next level by becoming the official ticketing partners of the Indian Premier League, popularly known as IPL, teams, Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings). This saw them become the market leaders and earn a revenue of ₹12 crores.
In 2012, the company launched its official mobile application and added more sporting events to its platform, such as tennis, badminton, and many more.
Four years later, in 2016, they raised $100 million to improve their services, which enabled them to sell 3 million tickets for Amir Khan’s Dangal, in a single weekend!
Now the company has opened operations towards becoming an events management company.
Since the company entered the $100 million revenue club in 2018, they have been promoting numerous non-movie businesses simultaneously.
In the last couple of decades of being operational, BookMyShow has become a name that everyone in the country uses and has heard of.
So, this weekend, make sure you check out the top things happening around you on the BookMyShow app and book your tickets.
Happy Entertainment!
