So, today, we are going to get to know MakeMyTrip founder, Deep Kalra, a little better.
MakeMyTrip founder, Deep Kalra was born in Hyderabad and grew up in Ahmedabad and Delhi. He pursued his bachelor’s degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and in 1992, completed his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. He is the founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip, which in the year 2000, started as a service for NRIs in the United States to book flight tickets for coming back home. Now MakeMyTrip has evolved into a complete travel solution, and in 2020, became a $500 million revenue company.

Let’s have a look at Deep Kalra’s life before MakeMyTrip. In 1992, he completed his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and moved on to work at ABN Amro, a private banking company, for 3 years. He was later tasked with the responsibility of setting up the operations of AMF Bowling, a major operator of bowling centres and manufacturer of bowling equipment, in India. This was considered his first entrepreneurial attempt. However, this venture failed and he moved back to the corporate world. He started working as a VP of Business Development at GE Capital, which is a financial services company. When he was working there, he happened to sell his wife’s car online, for a greater amount than expected. This made him realise the power of commerce and lit a desire in him to start an e-commerce business.
However, at that time, people were very skeptical about e-commerce in India, especially when it came to making payments online, as it was a relatively new concept. So, he launched MakeMyTrip in the United States, where he offered the facility to book flight tickets to India. It wasn’t until 5 years after this that MakeMyTrip started its operations in India, and worked its way to become one of the most successful companies in the travel industry. Apart from MakeMyTrip, Deep Kalra also runs a non-profit organisation, called I Am Gurgaon. This organisation works on improving the quality of life of the people living in the city of Gurgaon.
He is also a member of the governing body of Ashoka University, NASSCOm’s Executive Council, and Chairman of NASSCOM’s Internet Working Group. He is also an active investor. Some of the ventures he has invested in are Blume Ventures, Sequoia Capital India, Intel Capital, and many more.
As of 2020, the total net worth of MakeMyTrip’s founder is $136 million. It is safe to say that he has changed the way people in India travel and revolutionised the travel industry in the country.
